There are plenty of free messengers client for Pc, laptops and smartphones on the market but, honestly, Whatsapp is the best and most robust, flexible, popular instant messenger available today. It only has only a (big) drawback compared to some other messaging apps: it’s not compatible (by default) with desktop OS, which means, it can be installed on your notebook or laptop but only following some precise step-by-step procedure (explained in this article).
Indeed, unlike Skype and Viber, WhatsApp doesn’t have a native desktop platform. But Why using Whatsapp on a laptop instead of your phone?
Well, some people like to have a text messenger for their phone when they are outside the house. But upon coming home, they turn to their laptops since it is easier to type using its keyboard compared to the small onscreen buttons on a smartphone. WhatsApp doesn’t have that capability, that’s why it could be a good option to install and use this app on your notebook. Here are two main methods to donwload and install Whatspp on your laptop:
Method 1: BlueStacks Android Emulator
The first method involves BlueStack. BlueStack is an Android emulator meaning it allows you to run the Android OS in a different system, in this case your laptop. It is compatible with Windows XP, Vista, 7, and 8. There is also a version for Mac so you can use it if you have a Macbook. Now, let’s proceed with the steps. Download the installer for BlueStacks from this page and install it.
Once installation is done, open BlueStacks. The program starts at the Top Apps screen. Go to the My Apps section. Click the icon at the header labeled “My Apps”. You will be brought to the screen. Locate the App Search function and click it. A screen will pop up showing you the search bar. In here, key in “whatsapp for PC” and the engine will automatically search for you.
On the first screen, click “Agree and Continue”. On the next, choose your country and enter your number. The app will send a verification code to the number you entered.
Enter the verification code. On the next screen, enter your name. Add your contacts and you can start sending messages.
Method 2: Wassapp Client
The other method involves Wassapp. This program is from Low Level Studio and is also an emulator but only runs WhatsApp. Thus, it is lighter for the system compared to BlueStack. Download Wassapp from this link and install it.
When you start the program, you will be presented with two options: login from an existing account or register. If you already have an account, just login. Otherwise, choose register.
Enter your phone number and password. Password would be the IMEI number for Android or WiFi Address for Mac. Choose your preferred mode of verification – SMS or voice. Click the Request Code button. Enter the code you receive. You will be given an auto-generated password which you’ll use to log into WhatsApp.
Done !
N.B. Remember that Whatsapp offers full cross-platform compatibility for Android, Nokia, Windows, Blackberry, and iOs Apple smartphones. Furthermore, the app is completely ad-free. But, unfortunately, it has a $1.99 download fee for Apple. It is free to download and install for Android but there is a $0.99 subscription fee after the one-year free trial. The fees however is significantly less compared to having a text plan, especially if you text people internationally.
