WhatsApp for Android: the latest update adds support for Android Nougat notification system

android nougat notification systemAn important update has been added to WhatsApp: the app will now finally support the Android Nougat new notification system. What does it mean? It means that starting from Beta version 2.17.13 of WhatsApp, Android Nougat users will have access to the full notification system.

So, thanks to this latest upgrade, people who use smartphones running Android 7.0 or 7.1 Nougat will now be able to see all messages from a conversation, it doesn’t matter if personal or group chat, both of them. Furthermore, thanks to this latest update, when you receive a new message from the same conversation the Quick Reply option will not disappear. And that’s not all, since this new update fixes also the notification issues reported on Android Wear devices.

All these improvements are available for those of you who are enrolled to the beta testing program available on Google Play. If you are not yet a Beta Tester but want to join the program, you simply have to sign up by clicking on the ‘Become a Tester’ button. Another way to install this latest beta version of WhatsApp for Android on your device is by downloading it from some safe websites such as APK Mirror, which allow access to apps signed by Google. Alternatively, you can wait until this latest update will be added to a stable version of the app.

Even if WhatsApp is currently one of the most successful instant messaging app of the world (more that 1 billion monthly active users), the Facebook-owned app has even bigger plans for its future. According to some reports, WhatsApp is preparing to bring structured messages for enterprises/businesses. At least this is what WABetaInfo says with a report on Twitter.

According to WABetaInfo, a new feature has been spotted in WhatsApp’s latest updates on Android, iOS and Windows. With the addition of the new functionality, WhatsApp takes another step to be more business friendly.

WhatsApp for Android: the new 2.17.6 Beta version lets users search and send GIFs from Giphy and Tenor

GIFs android beta 2 17 6This recent update of WhatsApp will certainly make Android users very happy. A new interesting feature has been added to Beta version 2.17.6, allowing WhatsApp users to search for GIFs from within the app thanks to the addition of a built-in GIF search engine. Let’s see what changes.

Before this update, Android users could only send GIFs that were already downloaded on their device. Or, as an alternative, they could use third party apps. But now, thanks to the addition of this new feature, WhatsApp users can easily search for new GIFs. It is possible to use this new feature by simply tapping the emoji button that is located to the left of the text field. After that a menu will pop up with a list of options. Now users will be able to search for a specific keyword and the results will come from GIF platforms such as Giphy and Tenor.

But Beta version 2.17.6 of WhatsApp for Android has another surprise for the joy of its users, since another useful option has been added. Users have now the ability to send up to 30 photos in a single message (so far the limit was just 10). Isn’t it great? Quite oddly, these new features for the moment are not available with the latest 2.17.8 beta version, but we expect that they will be added soon to a stable one. In the mean time you can download the APK from some safe sites such as APK Mirror.

Despite the growing success (now WhatsApp has more than one billion active users all over the world), the life of this Facebook-owned instant messaging app is far from being easy. Always under the spotlights and criticized by competitors and governments, now the app must face new allegations of a security flaw which allows governments and hackers to access users’ texts.

Obviously Facebook claims that the flaw, found by Tobias Boelter (a cryptography and security researcher at the University of California, Berkley), doesn’t exist and that no one can intercept WhatsApp messages, but reports have claimed the contrary. Boelter told The Guardian that ‘If WhatsApp is asked by a government agency to disclose its messaging records, it can effectively grant access due to the change in keys‘. How can it happen?

As we know, thanks to the ‘end-to-end’ encryption, messages are visible only to the person who has sent them and to the contacts who receive them. This happens by using a ‘lock’, which is paired with a ‘key’ that just senders and recipients have. Well, according to these recent allegations, WhatsApp has the ability to force these keys and re-encrypt messages, without the contacts being aware.

And that’s not all. According to The Guardian, Tobias Boelter reported this flaw to Facebook in April 2016. At the time Facebook replied that they were aware of the problem, but nothing was done. Let’s see in the next few weeks what will be the reaction of WhatsApp.

Another record for WhatsApp: 63 billion messages sent globally on New Year’s Eve

new year eveThe year that has just begun seems to confirm the unstoppable success of WhatsApp, the Facebook-owned instant messaging app that in 2016 was able to reach the incredible amount of 1 billion monthly active users. And to confirm the positive trend, the company has revealed the last impressive result: during New Year’s Eve 63 billion WhatsApp messages were sent globally. Isn’t it incredible?

Obviously, this is a record for our beloved instant messaging app, considering that only in India the messages sent were 14 billion. Surprised by these numbers? Let’s see how it was possible to reach this result according to the statement released by WhatsApp itself to Venture Beat.

As we said, of the total of the 63 billion messages 7.9 billion were images and 2.4 billion videos. In India, where WhatsApp messages sent have been 14 billion, the 32% of users sent media messages such as GIF images, videos, voice messages and photos. 3.1 billion of images have been shared between Indian users, along with 700 million GIF images and 610 million videos.

We can easily say that the incredible success of WhatsApp during the last Christmas holidays was possible also thanks to the recent updates added to the app during the last few months. We are talking about the ability to share animated GIF images, just to give you an example. Or also the ability to stream shared videos, which enables users to view videos before they were downloaded. Not to mention the new and much awaited Video Calling feature.

The New Year’s Eve meant also the end of an era. If you are a WhatsApper you know that we are talking about the end of WhatsApp support on older versions of Android, iOS and Windows Phone. So, starting from the 1st of January 2017, WhatsApp won’t work anymore on devices running on Android 2.2 or lower, iOS 6 or lower, and Windows Phone 7.

WhatsApp for Windows Phone: the latest update brings a new, hidden, feature

WA for WP My StatusFurther updates on the horizon for WhatsAppers who use Windows Phone devices. The new Beta version has just been released, and a new, hidden feature has been spotted. This latest 2.16.316.0 Beta version of WhatsApp for Windows Phone is available for Windows 10 Mobile and Windows Phone 8.1 users, and even though it seems a regular beta with just bug fixes and performance improvements, it contains a new hidden feature.

This new hidden option is the My Status feature, and those of you who are familiar with Snapchat may already know how it works. But let’s see what is it. The My Status feature simply lets users post time-limited status update images to their contact list. Furthermore, users will be enable to customize those images. But, as we said, for the moment this new My Status option is not yet officially available, so WhatsApp users will have to wait to be able to use the feature.

During the year we could notice that the life of instant messaging services in Europe has become particularly difficult, mainly for privacy issues, and apps such our beloved WhatsApp may be forced to change their policy. It seems that the European Commission intends to update its privacy rules for services such as Skype and WhatsApp, making them subject to the same European Union regulations as telephone calls and SMS text messages. At least this is what a leaked legislative draft reveals.

But what will be changed? According to Politico, a new regulation will replace the 2002 ePrivacy Directive. With the new regulation all calls made with electronic communications will be confidential, thus listening, monitoring and interfering with such calls without users’ consent will be prohibited.

According to this leaked draft: “The settings of all the components of the terminal equipment placed on the market shall be configured to, by default, prevent third parties from storing information, processing information already stored in the terminal equipment and preventing the use by third parties of the equipment’s processing capabilities.”. The draft also adds: “The use of electronic communications services by natural or legal persons for the purposes of transmitting direct marketing communications is allowed only in respect of end-users who have given their prior consent.”

WhatsApp for iOS: users will soon be able to edit and revoke sent messages

WA iOS revoke optionThe year that is coming to an end has been really memorable for WhatsApp. The growing number of the users of this Facebook-owned app (which are now more than a billion all over the world) has confirmed its leadership in the field of instant messaging, and thanks to the hard work of its developers WhatsApp is noticeably improved, offering its users a wide range of services. All for free.

We have all seen that during the last year all the platforms supporting the service (first of all Android, but iOS, Windows Phone and iPhone as well) have frequently received major updates along with bug fixes and stability improvements. Obviously the most awaited feature was the Video Calling option, and that one too has been recently added to the app. Well, today there are other great news.

According to WABeta Info, thanks to the latest Beta version 2.17.1.869, iOS users will soon be able to revoke text messages sent by mistake, videos images and even edit them and send them again. Isnt’ it great? Certainly it happened to everyone to send a message to the wrong recipient, or with the wrong attachment. Well, now problem solved! Actually, this new option has not yet been confirmed by WhatsApp, so it easy to imagine that they are still testing the feature before making it official.

But how does this new feature work? According to WABetaInfo, in order to use this new Revoke option users just have to tap the message that they have just sent. After that it will be possible to select the new Revoke option from the menu that will pop up. And that’s not all. It seems also that senders will also be able to revoke messages that are already visible by the recipient.

As we said above, for the moment this new feature has been spotted only with the new Beta version 2.17.1.869 of WhatsApp for iOS devices, but it is not difficult to imagine that it will soon be added to the other platforms, especially Android.

As we said, this latest 2.16.392 update doesn’t come with any new features, but instead brings bug fixes and stability improvements. So you might think about installing it on your Android device. But the developers have not yet confirmed the news, so we just have to wait and see what will happen.
