WhatsApp for Windows Phone: the beta has been updated

whatsapp per windows phoneWindows Phone users will surely be happy to know that new developments regarding the use of WhatsApp are coming. Unfortunately those changes, for the moment, are available only for those who are part of the testing program (beta version) carried out in a private manner.

Anyway, it seems that among the new features included in the beta version of WhatsApp for Windows Phone, there is also the addition of two icons that indicate unread messages and missed calls. And that’s a really great news and a further progress for this popular app, which is the most used instant messaging application in the world.

But, on the other hand, we still don’t know if and when these new features will be included in the final version. In any case, the addition of the the icons indicating unread messages and missed calls follows the debut of the voice calls feature, which is already available for Android devices.  In fact, for the moment, voice calls are available only in the private beta version of WhatsApp for Windows Phone who, in the last few hours, has reached the version 2.12.44.

Over the next few weeks this update should make its official start also in the stable version of WhatsApp for Windows Phone smartphones. These last two options are undoubtedly very useful and interesting and will help to complete the new version of WhatsApp which is the instant messaging application most used by Windows Phone owners too.

For now, however, there are no clear indications about the release date of all these developments in the stable version, but it should not be too long. WhatsApp has never been very timely in the release of new updates of the app dedicated to the mobile operating system owned by Microsoft. It seems in fact that the Californian app prefers to use the Android and iOS versions to launch its updates.

WhatsApp: how to leave a Group Chat

leave a group chatGroup chats  are one of the best feature of WhatsApp, as they allow you to chat with multiple contacts at once, rendering communication much faster. They are very appreciated by WhatsApp users, and probably you too are one of them and often use this popular function.

If so, please don’t try to deny it, it surely happened that you wanted to leave a group because of arguments or because you simply were no more interested in the topics discussed. It’s normal and happened to all of us. So why did’t you leave that Group Chat? Maybe because you don’t know how to do it. So, today we’ll  see together how we can leave a Group Chat on WhatsApp.

If you are an Android user, simply open WhatsApp, go to your Chat List and tap and hold your finger on the name (title) of the Group you would like to leave. Now, to leave the group chat, select Delete and Exit Group. If you use an iPhone, from WhatsApp select the title of the Group you want to leave. Tap Info, then select Leave and delete Group, and then tap on Leave and Delete.

It is even easier if you have a Windows Phone. First af all open WhatsApp. Now go to the chats screen and press the name of the Group you want to leave until you see a menu. From here, simply select yes on the confirmation screen. If you have a BlackBerry, open the Chats screen and select the group you want to leave. Now you just have to click Exit Group.

If you were the administrator of the Group you just left, another one of the participant will replace you. So, if you wish to rejoin the group, you have to obtain the new administrator’s authorization. In fact only the administrator has the power to remove and add participants of the Group Chat.

WhatsApp: how to join a Group Chat

how to join whatsapp groupWhatsApp chats are really useful. They allow you to chat with friends or colleagues to organize dinners or meetings, or simply to stay in touch with people who live far from you. There are two kinds of WhatsApp chats: Group Chats or broadcast. Using the broadcast, you send a message to several people at once, ideal, for example, at Christmas time. The recipients of the broadcast receive a message from us without seeing the other recipient, and their answers will be visible only to us.

With Group Chats instead all participants can intervene and read what others write. The Group Chat must have a title (which will be the name of the group that all participants will see), and to add participants you have to press the + symbol (or type the name). But how can you join a Group Chat? Let’s see how to do it. Up to 50 people can be part of a Group Chat and, at the same time, you can create up to 50 groups. Each group has one or more administrator and only administrators can add or remove participants.

So, to be part of a Group Chat, you need to ask to the administrator to add you. Another way could be that you to create your own Group Chat, adding the same persons who are in the Group you want to be part of. If you really want to be added to a Group Chat, there is also one last method. If  you are very close to its administrator, you can do it by yourself through his smartphone (obviously if he agrees).

To remove participants from the Group, you have to tap on the Title of the Group, then touch and hold the name of the participant you want to remove until you see the menu. If you use an Android smartphone, from the same menu you can create a “shortcut” of the Group on the home page of your device. If the administrator of the Group decides to leave it, another one of the participants will administrate it, so if the old administrator wants to rejoin the Group, he has to ask for the permission.

Another nice thing about Group Chats is that the notifications of the messages differ from other kind of notifications. So you can choose the tone, the colour of the LED and if to use the vibration. It is important to remeber that also Group Chats messages have the check marks, so if a message has been read by all participants, two blue check marks will appear next to it

16 alleged terrorists detained thanks to WhatsApp?

whatsappIt is undeniable that WhatsApp is now part of our lives. This famous app is currently the most used instant messaging application for smartphones, and as you know is extremely handy to stay in touch with your family, colleagues and friends. You can use it whenever you want, wherever you are, all you need is an Internet connection. Furtnermore, It is much cheaper than SMS (nearly free), faster, and through it you can share not just messages, but videos, music and pictures.

But that’s not all. In the last few hours there are news that report that WhatsApp (yes, WhatsApp) also helped Belgian policy, with the cooperation of US authorities, to detain 16 alleged terrorists with ties to Chechen rebels. In fact it seems that US law enforcement was able to pass to Belgian authorities information gathered from WhatsApp messages.

The announcement was given by ABC News, which reports that, due to lack of evidence, several of the suspects have already been released by Belgian authorities. The investigation started after a man who had been wounded in the fighting in Syria returned to Belgium. Again, we have to face a dilemma of difficult solution: shall we allow the authorities to have access to private communications between users, in order to be able to locate the many terrorist cells spread throughout the world, or shall we respect the privacy of ordinary citizens?

WhatsApp uses a particular technology called end-to-end encryption to keep the messages private. Obviously FBI is not a fan of this technology, used also by other major tech companies. In fact the encryption make it very difficult to have acces to private information. So, according to the reports, it seems that the agency had a virtual backdoor allowing law enforcement agencies to access encrypted information if they had a warrant.

Obviously FBI has not given the name of the agency involved in the transfer of information from WhatsApp to Belgian authorities.

WhatsApp: how to turn off your conversation tones

turn off conversation tonesWhatsApp has quickly become one of the most-used applications to send instant messages. One of its favourite options is the one that allows you to create group chats, so you can stay in touch with your friends, your family or your colleagues. But when a group is too big and you constantly get messages it could be annoying, especially when you are at work. But there is a solution. You can solve the problem simply turning off the notifications of a group of WhatsApp. Let’s see how.

To mute the conversation tones of one group chat without silencing your mobile, the first thing you have to do is to open your WhatsApp group chat. Then click on the Menu button if you are an Android user, the Info button if you use an iPhone. From here tap on Mute. Now you can choose the time period for which the notifications from this group chat should be muted (it can be 8 hours, 1 day, 1 week or 1 year). At the end of this period, notification tones will be back to normal.

And if you want to mute just a single contact on WhatsApp? I bet you too have a friend who bombards you of WhatsApp messages at any time of the day. If you want to “shut him up” for a while, and do not receive notifications even by the group chats where he participates, there is a simple and fast method. If you use an Android smartphone, you just have to launch the application and select the last conversation you had with the user you wish to block. If there are no recent discussions involving this person, press the button for creating a new message (the one with the + symbol in the upper right corner) and select the name from the contact list.

Now tap Menu and select first Other and then the option Block. From here you can confirm you want to “mute” this contact by clicking on OK. From the moment a contact is “muted”, he can not check the status of the person who locked him (or her!) – so this contact has no possibility to know whether you are online or when you were connected the last time – and all his  messages will not be delivered to the recipient (those messages will have one single gray check mark). So, even if he won’t receive a notice that you “muted” him, he can easily understand what happened.

If you change idea, you simply have to click on the button to create a new message (the one with the + symbol), hold your finger pressed on the contact anc click Unmute.
If you use an iPhone, there is a similar procedure. Go to Settings > Account > Privacy > Blocked. From here you just have to press the button Add new and select the contact you wish to block. To unblock this contact, you simply have to open the same menu and, when you are on the name of the interested contact, swipe from right to left and tap Unblock.

How to know if your WhatsApp message was read

How to know if your WhatsApp message was readIf you frequently use WhatsApp, you certainly already know every secret of this successful instant messaging app. But, if you are a new user, probably you are not yet aware of all the functions it offers. For example  there is an option that lets everyone know when a message has been read by the recipient. With the introduction of this option you can no longer pretend that you have not read a message, because whoever sent it, will receive a notification as soon as it has been read.

In fact on WhatsApp, when a message has been seen and read, a double blue check marks will appear next to the message. It happens on Android, Windows Phone and iPhone smartphones. So, let’s see in detail what happens. When you see a single check mark (v), it means that the message was sent successfully. If you see a double check marks (vv), it means that the message was received but not yet read. Finally, if you see two blue check marks, it means that the message was read.

If you need to see more info regarding your messages, you will be able to see a Message Info screen, where you can “track” your message history seeing when it was delivered and read by the recepient, or even when it was listened (if it was a Voice Message). To access the Message Info screen you have to open a chat with a contact or a group, then you need to tap and hold on your sent message. Tapping again the Information symbol, the Message Info Screen will then show: Delivered when your message has reached your recipient’s phone, but the receipient has not yet read it; Read if the recipient has read the message (or seen, if the receipient has seen a picture or a video).

So it seems that the only way to hide the two blue check marks is to open WhatsApp without entering into the conversation, as only opening it the double check marks turn blue. There are actually another couple of tricks: using your smartphone in Plane Mode or reading WhatsApp through the widget on Android. To add the WhatsApp’s widget on Android, you can select it from the main screen.

Android users who have the latest versions, can download straight from WhatsApp site the update which allows to disable the two blue check marks. It is a simple procedure. Once downloaded the update, you just have to go to Settings, Account, Privacy, and then you can remove the blue check marks.

WhatsApp: goodbye subscription fee?

whatsapp subscriptionAccording to some rumors, big news may soon arrive regarding the use of WhatsApp. The most widely used application in the world for instant messaging from smartphones (Android, iOS and other mobile platforms), purchased by the owner of Facebook (Mark Zuckerberg), could be updated with a version containing advertising.

If those rumors are correct, Zuckerberg intends to introduce targeted advertising to abolish the 0.89 euro cents (0.99 if you pay in dollars) that users have to pay once a year to use the chat. The application then would go back to being totally free, but the banners would be the price to pay. A target-advertising, as we said. If this decision is confirmed, Zuckerberg will sell data at a high price to companies who, in this way, may provide their services and targeted products (exactly as with Facebook Ads).

For the moment, as we said before, there are no official communication about this decision, and probably during the next few weeks we will know more details. If these rumors are confirmed, this decision arrives just after a statement released by David Wehner (the CFO of Facebook), who declared that a particular feature, Message for Business, which you can already find on Facebook, is going to be added also to WhatsApp.

But for now, users who decide to register to WhatsApp for the first time, still have their one year free trial period. At the end of this first year, you have to pay a very small fee to renew the license for one more year. Small indeed: 0.99 dollars or 0.89 Euros. It is not a big amount, especially if you compare it to the cost of SMS, but maybe someone may welcome the possibility to use the app completely for free. How can you pay your licence now? You can extend your licence in two ways: using PayPal or Google Wallet.
