How to solve WhatsApp privacy issues: features that (maybe) you don’t know

whatsapp privacy 2Since most of us use WhatsApp, we would like to be able protect our privacy and avoid useless discussions with relatives, friends or colleagues. It seems indeed that this instant messaging app has given people an effective instrument of control. And if it wasn’t enough, recently we’ve discovered that WhatsApp is the worst app when it comes to privacy.

That’s what the Electronic Frontier Foundation has just declared in its last annual report (‘Who Has Your Back?’), which analyses the results of a research regarding the privacy of users of apps and services. So, we really don’t have a solution for this problem? Maybe not a proper one, but today what we can do is to give you some suggestions to protect your privacy on WhatsApp.

Some features of WhatsApp that (maybe) you do not know
Do you really know all the services that  WhatsApp provides you? There are some “secret” functions that can help you to protect your privacy and manage better your app.

1. How to hide Last Seen. Yes, it is possible to hide the timestamp which tells whether you are Online or when you were Last Seen. You just have to go to Settings > Account > Privacy > Last Seen Option. Tap on Who can see my personal Info and select whom you prefer to show the information (Everyone, My Contacts and Nobody).

2. How to block a contact. WhatsApp allows you to block unwanted users. You simply have to open the conversation with a contact you don’t want to chat anymore and click on Other and then Block. If you wish to block more than one contact, you have to go to Settings  > Account > Privacy >  Blocked. Once you are here tap the Add New button to add contacts to your Blocked list.

3. How to change your WhatsApp number. This option allows you to use the same WhatsApp account and to change the phone number. Open Settings > Account > Change number.

4. How to get a WhatsApp password. The app does not have any passwords built into it. You will find many apps which can help you get one, for example ChatLock+ or App Lock.

5. How to delete your WhatsApp account. It is very simple. You just have to go to Settings > Account > Delete Account.

6. Change the profile picture of a friend. If you want to change the profile picture of one of your friends, first of all you have to save an image of 561×561 pixel with the name of his telephone number. After that, you can move the new picture to Profile Picture Folder (which is situated in the SD of your device).

7. How to run multiple WhatsApp account. Also this procedure is extremely simple, you just have to download Switch Me (or using a dual sim phone)

WhatsApp for iPhone: iOS9 will bring new features

whatsapp per iphoneAlthough the new version of iOS (iOS9) is not yet official, there are already some rumours concerning some of its apps. Among them there is obviously WhatsApp, the popular instant messaging application owned by Facebook. What we can say for sure is that currently only a few people can use its new beta, but it seems that two versions of it will soon be released.

The first one will be an experimental one and it seems certain that it will contain some bugs, while it seems that the second version will include several interesting new features. For example, if you love taking pictures and sharing them with your contacts, you will have new functions which will allow you to edit images before sending them. And that’s not all: you will also have different options for shooting your pictures with the possibility to customize the background for each contact.

Another important change could also involve your WhatsApp archive. In fact the upgrade would enable you to handle it if the phone were to run out of storage. Through these updates WhatsApp will help us to identify the conversations that could create memory problems because containing many multimedial files, and will guide us in creating space on our device.

It should also be introduced the possibility to reply to messages directly from the notification, without opening WhatsApp. Furthermore, there should be also the possibility to customize the ringtones of the messages, so that you can assign to each contact a different tone.

And finally the most anticipated and interesting feature: the one for marking messages as unread. With this new feature (which you surely already use on your email) you can decide to ignore some messages without opening all conversations. Also, you can mark a message as unread just as a reminder to reply at another time.

How to use Whatsapp calling Feature on iPhone

whatsapp1It is now possible to make phone calls through WhatsApp Messenger on iPhones and tablets equipped with Apple’s iOS operating system. The latest version of WhatsApp for iPhone includes a Voice over Internet Protocol, or VOIP, feature.

This feature, which is named WhatsApp Voice Calling on iPhone, lets you call any other WhatsApp User in the world that has the same solution for free, 9to5Mac blogger Zac Hall reported. The feature is similar to a solution found in Facebook’s Messenger app for iPhone. WhatsApp started rolling out the new feature in April.
Some reviewers are so impressed with WhatsApp Voice Calling that they believe it could become the industry standard for VOIP. A slightly different version of the service is available for Android.

How to Install and Utilize WhatsApp Voice Calling on iPhone
Although the “call button” on WhatsApp’s iOS version has been available for some time, it was only recently activated. Unfortunately, most iPhone users will have to make a number of changes in order to activate WhatsApp Voice Calling.

The process is a little complicated, but it is well worth your time because it could reduce your long distance phone bill. Here are the steps that you will have to take to install WhatsApp Voice Calling on an iOS device:
Make sure that your device has been jailbroken. Jailbreaking is a slang term for modifying your iPhone or iPad so it can run non-Apple programs. There are a number of excellent guides online that can help you do this, including this excellent tutorial from the Redmond Pie blog: How To Jailbreak iOS 8.1.2 Using TaiG [Guide].

whatsapp2Once your device has been jailbroken, you will have to download and install the latest version of WhatsApp for iOS from the App Store. Only that version contains the WhatsApp Voice Calling feature. To install it, follow these instructions:

Install and launch Cydia on your phone. Cydia is a directory of jailbroken resources for iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch. You will need to use one of the popular Cydia installers found online. A popular one is Cydiainstaller.net.

Once Cydia is up and running, use Mobile Safari to navigate to this address: https://dev2.whatsapp.net/ios/WhatsApp/

Download and install WhatsApp Beta by tapping the link at the bottom of the page.

Once the download is complete, launch WhatsApp as usual from your phone.

If the installation is successful, you should see the Calling Button on your WhatsApp.

The only way to know if the installation was successful will be to have somebody call you on WhatsApp using another VOIP solution, such as Skype. You can also test WhatsApp by calling your iOS device from a computer equipped with a service like Skype or borrow somebody else’s phone and use it to call your phone. The call should come in just like a normal phone call; it will even use your ringtone.

whatsapp3Once that has been done, you should make at least one call over WhatsApp to make sure it is working.

To call somebody over WhatsApp, all you’ll have to do is scroll down your contact list until you find a name with a call icon next to the chat button. Simply click on the call button to talk to them. If WhatsApp Voice is active, the call should begin almost immediately.

WhatsApp Call Quality
Even though they are practically free, news reports indicate that the quality of WhatsApp calls can be questionable. TechCrunch reported that WhatsApp calls loaded faster than Skype but sometimes lacked sound and quality.
One problem is that wireless phone systems in many parts of the world simply are not set up for solutions such as WhatsApp Calling. VOIP calls take up a lot of bandwidth, which means the service may not work in some locations, including rural areas with limited mobile phone service.
Not surprisingly, you may need to move to an area with a strong signal. WhatsApp Voice Calling may not work in buildings, halls, or other areas where something is blocking the signal.
WhatsApp Calling may not work on calls to some countries, including regions in Europe, Middle East, and Latin America, because of limitations to the phone systems there, TechCrunch reported. There is also a possibility that some mobile service providers could limit the service because it might cut into their long-distance profits.

You might be able to get better quality over WhatsApp Calling by using a Wi-Fi connection rather than a mobile connection. Be careful with that because some Wi-Fi systems will require you to get the administrator’s permission. It might also be possible to make VOIP calls over your computer by using WhatsApp Webb.

Interesting Features of WhatsApp Calling for iPhone
The most interesting feature of WhatsApp Calling is that you will only see the names of other WhatsApp users that will call you. Anybody that calls you on another VOIP solution, such as Skype, will come up as Unknown, and no picture will appear.
This occurs because WhatsApp only accepts other WhatsApp Caller IDs. It is currently not compatible with other services’ caller IDs. Some observers expect this feature to be added to the service in the future.

Some people will like the lack of caller ID because it offers a higher level of privacy. Some users may dislike it because they cannot see who is calling them. A WhatsApp call will work like any other call; you’ll have the ability to accept and decline and will have such options as mute, speaker, and message.

The Future of WhatsApp Voice Calling
As you can see, WhatsApp Voice Calling for iOS is a work in progress that is far from complete. The solution is brand new, and many of the features are still in beta testing.

That means almost anything about it could change, including the quality. The reviewers report that it is easy to use and loads fast, but some users report having a hard time hearing voice calls over the app. Some people also report that calls have broken up, even in areas with strong signals.
Despite its limitations, WhatsApp Voice Calling is a welcome addition to this popular messenger solution. iPhone users that want to cut their phone bills would be well advised to give it a try.

WhatsApp: rumours of two new features

whats app like buttonThere are rumours about two possible new features which should be itroduced soon in the popular instant messaging application. WhatsApp, which was created in 2009 by two former employees of Yahoo, immediately reached a huge success worldwide. The popularity of the app led to the million dollar acquisition by Facebook.

Now WhatsApp is the most used instant messaging application in the world and offers a lot of useful and interesting functions to its users, who certainly appreciate the frequent updates and enhancements. So, what’s happening exactly in the last few hours?

There are rumours of other two substantial updates, but for the moment nothing is official. It seems that some changes (some code sequences) were found in the beta version of the app, revealing the nature of these two new features. One of them should be the “Like” button.

In fact it seems that WhatsApp too will allow its users to give their “likes” to photos shared between multiple users. This function is already existing on Facebook (maybe one of the most popular between its users), and it seems that WhatsApp has implemented it too, but on a smaller scale.

If rumours are correct, the other new feature should be the possibility to mark messages as unread, and come back later to reply. This function could be very handy if you are really busy or not in the mood to reply immediately to your messages. Or, in some cases, if you need to take your time to ponder carefully over your answer.

As we have already said, these are just rumours for the moment, and the company has not yet given official statements. On the other hand, these two features are quite similar to those already provided by Facebook, so, for once, rumours seem to have some valid grounds.

WhatsApp: how to create a Broadcast List

broadcast listWhatsApp Messenger, among its many functions, offers a particularly useful one that allows you to send the same message to multiple contacts at once. The peculiarity of this function is that each recipient doesn’t know who the other recipients are. We already have a similar opportunity in our email, through which every recipient reply diretly only to the sender of the message.

This feature of WhatsApp is called Broadcast, and it consists in a list of contacts to whom you can send one or more messages. It is very handy as, once you have formed your list, you do not have to recreate it every time you want to send a message to the same contacts. The fundamental requirement for members of the list to receive your messages is that they have registered your telephone number on their agenda. Now, let’s see how to create a Broadcast List.

Obviously the first step is to open WhatsApp. At the top of the Chats screen you will see the Broadcast Lists button: tap it. Now, press New List at the bottom of the Broadcast Lists Screen and type the names of your contact (if you prefer, you can press the + button to choose the names from your contact list). At this point you can tap Create. Now and you have your Broadcast List. As we said before, remember that when you send a message to the Broadcast List, all recipients in the list will receive it. The message will be received as o normal one and you will see their reply in your Chats screen, and only you will receive it.

Once you have a Broadcast List you have the possibility to modify it, with an extremely simple procedure. To edit one of your Broadcast Lists, first of all you need to open your Broadcast Lists and click on the (i) button on the List you want to update. Now, from the Info screen, you have two choices: the first one is to change the name of the Broadcast List; the other one allows you to remove or to add recipients from the list, by simply tapping on Edit.

It is important that you remember that Broadcast Lists are completely different from Group Chats. Infact Broadcast Lists are a one-to-many message, where with Group Chats your recipients will participate in a group conversation.

WhatsApp: released the update for Windows Phone (2.12.70.0)

windows phone voice callingWhatsApp, which has reached the incredibly amount of over 800 million active users each month, is developing a lot, especially since it was bought by Facebook. As you know, it is now the most used instant messaging application in the world and its success is daily growing. As a consequence its updates are always followed with great interest by the public.

Among WhatsApp features, probably Voice Calling is one of the favourite between its users. In fact it is already used by billions of people across the world, who use this function to call for free friends, family or colleagues. Initially Windows Phone users couldn’t use it, as it was enabled only for Android, Blackberry 10 and iPhone. But now things are developing again, and WhatsApp has introduced Voice Calling feature also on Windows Phone.

Surely you have noticed that, so far, WhatsApp has not provided to Windows Phone the same level of attention given to Android, which was always the first one to test and receive all experimental features, but now something has changed. Now updates on Windows Phone are more frequent, demonstrating that the attention to its users is increased. Windows Phone users have been waiting quite a long time before being able to make calls with WhatsApp, and with version 2.12.60.0 it seemed it could finally be possible.

But unfortunately the reality was quite different, since a large number of users have encountered many problems with this feature. In some cases the app no longer worked.  Luckily WhatsApp studied the problem and has now released a new update. So, will this latest update solve the problem?

The new version 2.12.70.0, which you can find on Windows Phone Store, doesn’t have new features but fixes many bugs and also the performances of the application seem much improved. If you download it, you’ll find some enhancements with the notification and in sending multimedia files, besides some new translations.

WhatsApp introduces multi-ethnic emoji in its last beta

emojiWhile on the Play Store is now available the version 2.12.158 of WhatsApp, a new beta is already arrived,  the version 2.12.161. This  new beta contains some updates which surely will be appreciated by Android users. The enhancements involve mainly the emoji: in fact some of these are now also available in a multi-ethnic variation. As usual, it is really extremely easy to add them to your messages, and some of them are very funny too.

But let’s see how to use them. As we said, it’s very simple. Just go to the usual list of emoticons (the one containing the smileys). Scrolling down, you will find some arrows next to some smileys. By pressing them you will see a menu opening, from where  you can choose six different kinds of complexion. This politically correct option has already been introduced by many other services, so WhatsApp, which is the most used instant messaging application in the world, could not avoid this step.

Some of the emoji introduced are truly unique and funny, and we are sure that many nerds will appreciate the one of Spock’s Vulcan salute. At the moment we still do not know when this new feature will be available on the Play Store. In the meantime, if you are keen on using it, you can download the latest beta of WhatsApp directly from the official website.

Maybe you remember that these new emoji had already been introduced in version 8 of Unicode, which is also present in Android. Unfortunately, with the operating system of Google these could only be displayed (or, in some cases, not even) but could not be used. If we had wanted to use them, we would have to use WhatsApp Web service, which runs only from PC. Luckily now this problem is solved, and  these new emoji are available directly on the emoji keyboard, just like the classic ones.
