WhatsApp for Windows Phone: the new 2.17.94 Beta version brings a new (hidden) feature

WA Windows PhoneRecently WhatsApp developers have released several major updates available for Android, iOS and Windows Phone devices. So WhatsApp users can now enjoy more options such as the new Status feature or the Two Step Verification security feature, just to mention the most recent of them.

But WhatsApp users, at least Windows Phone users, probably don’t remember that with an update added in December, the iPhone platform of WhatsApp received a very useful feature wich allows WhatsApp users to cancel or edit an already sent message. However, this Unsend feature works only if the recipient of the message has not yet read the message and, furthermore, you need to remember that you have 29 minutes to recall your message.

Well, according to WABetaInfo this new Unsend option has been added also to the 2.17.94 Beta version of the app for Windows Phone devices. Isn’t it great? So, if you want to install this latest version of WhatsApp on your Windows Phone device, you can already download it from the Windows Store.

The popularity of the Facebook-owned app seems unstoppable, and it is a fact that WhatsApp is now the most popular instant messaging service in the world. But despite this success, there is a recent statistic that will really astonish you.

To celebrate the fifth anniversary of the Google Play Store, Google has just  published the list of the best-selling apps, movies, games, books and music in the US. And that’s what we didn’t expect: WhatsApp is not on the top step of the podium. The full list shows at the top Facebook (obviously), followed by Facebook Messenger, Pandora Radio, Instagram and Snapchat.

However, watching carefully these Google statistics, it appears that WhatsApp is more successful outside of the United States, for example in the UK, where WhatsApp helds firmly the top position, followed by Facebook Messenger.

WhatsApp for Windows Phone: the latest 2.17.86 beta version brings a new feature that will help you organise your chats

WP Size TabGreat news for Windows Phone users. WhatsApp, the Facebook-owned instant messaging app, has just rolled out a new Beta version that will further improve the app performances, introducing some important updates that will help better manage your chats. Bad news is that for the moment the new features are available only for beta testers. Let’s see what’s happening.

As we said, the service has just released the new 2.17.86 beta version of the app for Windows 10 Mobile and Windows Phone 8.1 devices. This latest update it’s quite a major one, since it adds a new feature “Size” tab. Why this latest option is important? Thanks to this new feature users will get information about how much space a chat is taking up and which chat takes most of the space on app storage. Isn’t it useful? We are sure that Windows Phone users will appreciate this new feature.

Furthermore, beta version 2.17.86 comes with other new features. For example individual chat information such as how many messages have been shared between your contacts, or how many GIFs have been sent will be displayed.

That’s how the changelog explains to WhatsApp users these latest updates: ”Clicking on individual chats now gives you more detailed information. The Size tab contains the same data in a different order since the size is sorted by the size of Images and Text but not by the number.”.

As we said above, for now this is a beta version available just to beta testers, but we are convinced that the “Size” tab will soon be added to stable versions too. In any case, if you prefer to install the beta version on your Windows Phone device you can easily join the program. Just go to the Windows Store and sign up for the program.

Android and iOS platforms have not yet received this update, but we are sure that they will receive it soon.

WhatsApp: how to use the new Status feature on your Android, iPhone and Windows Phone devices

Status updatesA few days ago, on this blog, we talked about a new WhatsApp update called Stories, which now has been officially released and that  is available for all Android, iPhone and Windows Phone users. What is Stories and how can you use it?

This new feature, quite similar to the Stories feature of Instagram and Snapchat, allows users to share videos, pictures and GIFs with their contact. The characteristic of the Status update is that it disappears automatically after 24 hours. Now let’s see how to use this new WhatsApp feature, that will let you do different kind of actions.

First of all let’s see how to add WhatsApp Status update. Once you have opened WhatsApp, go to the Status icon and tap on it. Once you are here, you will be able to take a new photo or video or, if you prefer, you can select an existing one and send it simply by tapping the Send button. Of course you will be enabled to customize your personal Status updates.

Now that you have updated your status you can either wait for it to expire (24 hours) or delete it. In order to delete it just go to the Status screen and tap on the three dots next to My Status. At this point tap and hold your status update. After that tap on the Trash icon and then Delete. For iPhone users the procedure is slightly different: just tap on the three dots menu next to My Status and swipe left on the Status update. Now you can press Delete. What if you are a Windows Phone user? Don’t worry, just open the Status screen, press More, Trash and then Delete.

What’s great about this latest Status update is that let you mute or unmute status updates of a particular contact. Let’s see how you can do it. Once you are in your Status screen tap and hold the contact’s status update that you need to mute and press Mute. The procedure is a little different for iPhone users, who will need to swipe left on the contact’s status update and then tap Mute. If you use WhatsApp with a Windows Phone device you will have to go to the Status screen, long press a contact and finally tap Mute. What if you decide to unmute a status update? It’s very simple, you just need to go back to the muted status and tap Unmute.

If you are concerned about privacy issues, well, don’t worry, for Status updates are protected by the end-to-end encryption. By default you share your status updates with your contacts, alternatively you can decide to share them just with selected contacts. Here’s how you can change your status privacy.

First of all (of course) open WhatsApp and head to the Status screen. From here press Menu > Status Privacy. Now you can choose who is allowed to see your Status updates. iPhone users need to press the Privacy button located on the top left of the screen, while Windows Phone users have to tap More > Privacy settings. Finally just a reminder: if you have disabled the Read and Receipt option you can’t see who has seen your Status update.

WhatsApp: is there a monetization plan on the horizon?

WA monetizationIt seems that WhatsApp, the Facebook-owned instant messaging app, finally intends to put into action a plan to get money from its business. According to recent news there is already a man appointed of this important task, and his name is Matt Idema.

Idema, already a Facebook executive, has just joined WhatsApp team as a COO. But who is he, and what role is he going to cover ? While working for Facebook, Idema was leading product marketing for all of Facebook’s business products worldwide.

And now, according to a company spokesperson, monetization will be his main task at WhatsApp. All the details about WhatsApp’s monetization plans are to be defined yet, but it seems clear that Facebook has decided to further improve its incomes thanks to WhatsApp.

As we know, last year Brian Acton and Jan Koum (WhatsApp founders) decided to drop the small subscription charge that users had to pay to use the service, and in the meantime they promised to avoid advertisements, which are instead used by Facebook and Instagram (another Facebook-owned company).

And Acton and Koum have definitely not changed their idea since this anti-advertising policy has been recently confirmed. The new plan goes in a different direction. The company aims to offer businesses a new, better method to reach their customers, a method that doesn’t involve neither sending emails or text messages.

That’s what Jan Koum (CEO of WhatsApp) stated last year: ‘we want to test new tools to make this easier to do on WhatsApp, while still giving you an experience without third-party ads and spam‘.

So, it seems that Idema is going to actively cooperate with the company to reach this goal, reporting directly to Jan Koum. WhatsApp has currently about 200 employees and has reached the remarkable result of 1.2 billion monthly active users all over the world.

WhatsApp is planning to add a new feature similar to SnapChats’ Stories

whatsapp snapchat stories featureWhatsApp developers are really doing their best to beat competition, and it appears that the next major update will recall a popular feature that has already been introduced by its biggest rival: SnapChat.

We are talking about Stories, a very successful and useful feature, which will be added to WhatsApp along with other new options. To be honest Facebook (that owns both Instagram and WhatsApp) already added a similar feature to Instagram, so it’s not a secret that the Company really likes this option.

How does Stories work and why is it so hugely appreciated? SnapChat Stories are a series of photographs or videos that document users daily activities and that vanish just after 24 hours. This has become an extremely popular feature between SnapChat and Instagram users, and now it appears that WhatsApp developers are designing a quite similar feature that will enable WhatsApp users to share their photos and videos as part of a dedicated Status.

WABetaInfo has already published a screenshot of this feature which will be added at first on the iOS platform of WhatsApp, even if it is very likely that Android will follow. If rumours are correct, this new Status feature will be launched with the next 2.17.5 version of WhatsApp for iOS, and will be available in the Apple App Store. According to these rumours, WhatsApp developers have been implementing the feature since November 2016.

While Stories feature is hugely contributing to Instagram’s success, a TechCruch report refers that SnapChat Stories is experiencing a significant and constant decrease. Instagram was acquired by Facebook in April 2012 for approximately US$1 billion in cash and stock.

Furthermore, WhatsApp is also planning to add other new features to its service, and it seems also that WhatsApp Web will soon receive a new update that will allow users to Star, Delete and Forward multiple links and documents.

WhatsApp Two-Step Verification is now available to all Android, iPhone and Windows users

two step verificationWhen it comes to security, WhatsApp has always tried to provide its users the best possible service, despite several criticisms. And the latest feature just rolled out to all users of the app confirms this orientation. So, what changes?

Finally, the two-step verification security feature is available. The option has been under testing for several months and now all users using Android, iPhone and Windows devices will be able to verify in a more secure way their number when they install WhatsApp on their device. How can you use this important new feature? Don’t worry, it is not difficult at all.

The first thing you need to do is to provide a six-digit passcode (created by you) when you register your own phone number with WhatsApp again. The two-step verification security feature is optional, for this reason if you decide that you want to enable it you have to open WhatsApp > Settings > Account > Two-step verification > Enable. Once you have enabled the feature, you will have to enter the WhatsApp passcode that you have previously created, and provide an email address so that you will be able to recover your account if you forget the passcode.

The Facebook-owned company in its FAQ page explains that “This email address will allow WhatsApp to send you a link via email to disable two-step verification in case you ever forget your six-digit passcode, and also to help safeguard your account” .

If it’s true that this new option is very important for the safety of your device, you really have to pay attention when you enable it. Why? First of all because WhatsApp informs that they don’t verify the email address that you provide, so it is essential that you provide a correct email address to avoid being locked out of your own account in case you forget your passcode.

Furthermore, if you forget your passcode and you have not provided an email to disable the two-step verification feature, you will not be allowed to reverify on the app within seven days of last using the app. That’s what the company says: “After these 7 days, your number will be permitted to reverify on WhatsApp without your passcode, but you will lose all pending messages upon reverifying – they will be deleted. If your number is reverified on WhatsApp after 30 days of last using WhatsApp, and without your passcode, your account will be deleted and a new one will be created upon successfully reverifying,“.

The two-step verification security feature was introduced a few months ago in beta versions of the app for Android and Windows devices.

WhatsApp for Windows Phone: the latest version brings important updates

WA for Windows Phone 2 17 52 updateWindows Phone users have more reasons than ever to install (or update) WhatsApp on their devices. Thanks to this latest 2.17.52 version of WhatsApp that has just been released for Windows Phone devices, the media sharing cap limit has been considerably increased, so now users will be able to share 30 files, a noticeable improvement compared to the previous limit of 10.

The same update has been recently added to the iPhone platform, while Android users can find it only in beta versions of the app. If this is a huge improvement for the Facebook-owned app, Mspowerusers reports that this latest update of WhatsApp adds also a redesigned home page. According to Mspoweruser the new design involves switching to Microsoft’s new Pivot style already seen in other native apps such as Photos and People.

Finally, WhatsApp developers intend to revamp also the Status Messages feature of the app, as we have already seen in the latest beta of WhatsApp. In the future WhatsApp users will receive notifications every time one of their contacts changes its status. The great thing is that WhatsApp will allow you to mute and unmute the status notifications for specific users and, more important, let you see the mute list when required.

Furthermore, the new Status Message feature will add the ability to reply to your contacts’ status messages. Along with these major updates, this latest 2.17.52 version of WhatsApp for Windows Phone 8.1 and Windows 10 brings also the usual bug fixes and performance improvements. This is the complete WhatsApp changelog of the changes added with this latest update:

  • GIF Support.
  • UI changes under camera viewfinder too.
  • Now there is a new unread message count indicator too on chats tab.
  • Also increase the sharing limit from 10 images to 30 images, so you can now share more image.
