WhatsApp: a new data-sharing deal with Facebook may be very close to completion

data sharing plansIt seems that WhatsApp (that is currently the most used instant messaging app, with more than one billion active users all over the world) and Facebook (who is also the owner of WhatsApp) are thinking again about sharing their users data. Recent news report that a new data-sharing deal is very close to completion.

Despite what happened last year, soon after WhatsApp’s announcement to change its privacy policy, it appears that at the end WhatsApp has decided to share its users data with Facebook. As a result, WhatsApp users could experience again great concerns about their privacy. What’s happening?

Helen Dixon,  Ireland’s Data Protection Commissioner and also EU regulator, who already worked on WhatsApp/Facebook case, on Tuesday told Reuters that an agreement between the two company is very close, saying that “I think we are in agreement with the parties – WhatsApp and Facebook – that the quality of the information provided to users could have been clearer, could have been more transparent and could have been expressed in simpler terms,” saying also “We are working towards a solution on that.” She also added that she hopes that a final agreement will be reached this summer.

It is known that Facebook bought WhatsApp in 2014 for $19 billion, and during the acquisition Mark Zuckerberg, Facebook founder and owner, promised that they would have ensured that WhatApp users data would remain private and separate from Facebook, saying that “It would be pretty stupid of us to interfere.“.

At the time Jan Joum, WhatsApp founder, claimed that the app would have followed Facebook’s privacy policies, but through the years he also firmly stated that he would not allow user data to be used for advertising. The previous data-sharing plans between WhatsApp and Facebook were suspended in November, when the European Commission stated that Facebook “intentionally or negligently” submitted “misleading information” ahead of its WhatsApp takeover.

WhatsApp is planning to test a peer-to-peer payment system in India

Peer to peer paymentIt appears that for WhatsApp a new, important era is beginning. According to recent rumours, the Facebook-owned instant messaging app will introduce in the next six months a new peer-to-peer feature that will allow WhatsApp users digital payments.

We know that the app is used all over the world and has currently more than one billion active users, but the test will start from India. News website The Ken reported on Tuesday these rumours, stating that the app is working to launch person-to-person payments in India in the next six months, unfortunately without citing the sources of the information.

But why would the American company want to launch this new feature in India before that in any other country? Because the country is its biggest market, with about 200 million users. The company has not yet confirmed (or denied) these reports, but on WhatsApp’s website has been posted a particular job advertisement.

The post says that the Company is looking for an individual who can understand and explain India’s Unified Payments Interface (UPI) and the BHIM payments app that enable money transfers and merchant payments using mobile numbers, a candidate that can also collaborate with banks to resolve WhatsApp user issues.

Brian Acton, WhatsApp’s co-founder, in February told local media that he had talked to the Indian government about the intention to investigate digital payments in the country. Following this statement, recently a WhatsApp’s spokeperson said that “India is an important country for WhatsApp, and we’re understanding how we can contribute more to the vision of Digital India,” adding that “We’re exploring how we might work with companies that share this vision and continuing to listen closely to feedback from our users,”.

WhatsApp is not the first app that has thought about India to start this new feature. Truecaller, a Swedish communications app which has many users in India, last week started a mobile payment service based on the UPI platform.

WhatsApp for Android: the new 2.17.123 Beta version is already available for download

WA dor Android new betaA new update is available for Android users of WhatsApp. This Facebook-owned instant messaging app is currently one of the most popular all over the world, and the increasing number of users (already more than one billion worldwide) it’s the clear sign of its success.

We all know that WhatsApp is a multiplatform instant messaging app, and it can easily be installed on Android, iOS or Windows Phone devices. But we also know that the favourite platform of WhatsApp users is Android, so it’s logic that this is the platform that receives most of the updates.

So now let’s see what changes with this latest update of WhatsApp for Android devices. This latest 2.17123 Beta of WhatsApp for Android comes with some important improvements. First of all, this latest update brings the ability to set a text-only update in your WhatsApp profile. This feature is called About, and you can use it going to Settings > Profile. From here you can edit the text of your Status.

The other update added with this latest 2.17.123 Beta of WhatsApp for Android devices allows users to search and add animated GIFs right from within their WhatsApp chats. To use this option you simply have to tap the emoji button during a chat and then select GIF. There are two ways to install this latest Beta version of WhatsApp on your Android device. If you are a Beta Tester, you can download it from the Google Play Store. If you have not yet joined the program, you can download it from other safe sites such as APK Mirror.

We have often talked about concerns about security issues of WhatsApp and other instant messaging apps. Well, if it’s true that there are often some dangerous malawares, sometimes we are the principal cause of our problems. Recent news report what happened to an ex-investment banker who shared confidential information saying he would pay off his mortgage with the deal.

Christopher Niehaus, former managing director in the investment banking division at Jeffries, shared confidential client information with a friend, who was also a client of the firm. The Financial Conduct Authority fined him £37,198. The information was shared in a period between January and May 2016. That’s what a statement of the financial watchdog said: “Mr Niehaus used the instant messaging application WhatsApp to share this information. The information was shared by Niehaus because he wanted to impress the people that he shared the information with.” During the disciplinary process Niehaus was suspended from Jeffries, and he decided to resign before it ended.

WhatsApp: the next major update could be real annoying for its users

WA 29 marchWhat is happening to WhatsApp? We all know that the Facebook-owned instant messaging app (the most popular around the world, with more than one billion active users), has recently introduced several updates and that it is trying very hard to beat competitors giving its users new useful features.

But not all of them have been completely appreciated, on the contrary. For example the new Status feature, the option similar to Instagram Stories, that allows to customize your status with emojis and handwritten annotations, and that disappears after just 24 hours. After receiving many complaints by users, WhatsApp have had to re-introduce the original Status feature along with the new one.

Now, it seems that the service is planning to introduce a major update that could prevent users from blocking annoying contacts. What is happening? According to WABetaInfo, if introduced, this update will prevent WhatsApp users from hiding when they make changes to their own account. What does it means?

It means that your contacts will be alerted whenever you change the phone number linked to your account. If on one hand this is useful for being sure that you don’t lose favourite contacts, on the other it could prevent you from blocking annoying contacts that you really want to avoid.

For the moment WhatsApp owners have not yet confirmed the intention to add this update, which could be just part of the app’s existing security notifications. So let’s see what will be the next change to our beloved instant messaging app.

WhatsApp for Android: next 2.17.105 Beta version will add the new ‘Pinned chats’ feature and the Video Call Button

pinned chats for androidAndroid users of our favourite instant messaging app will soon be able to enjoy a couple of new features. According to WaBetaInfo, the latest 2.17.105 Beta version of WhatsApp for Android devices will add a new pinning feature and the video call button. Let’s see how you can use them.

The ‘Pinned chats’ feature will allow users to pin chats (even if, for the moment, not more than three). Why is this option useful? Because once you pin a message, it will always appear on the top, doesn’t matter how many messages will follow it. Needless to say, it will really help you saving time, since you won’t have to scroll through all your messages to find the one you are really interested in.

If you intend to use this option frequently, you might keep in mind that this feature is disabled by default, so you need to remember to turn it on in chat settings. Avid users of instant messaging apps certainly know that the Pinned Chats feature is not completely new, as also Telegram has just added a similar feature to its new update.

Now, the Video Call button. Since its introduction, WhatsApp users have made large use of the Video Calling feature. Now, thanks to integration of the Video Call button in the contact info, it’s even more easy to use this option. Depending on the moment (and of course on the contact) you have now three instant ways to reach your contacts: you can text them, call them or video call. All of this straight from the contact page.

If these are wonderful news for the Android users of the Facebook-owned service, we cannot say the same for WhatsApp Web users, who have just had to face the risk to be exposed to hackers. Security researchers of Check Point have just found out a bug that would have allowed hackers to take over users’ account just with a simple message. Reserchers said that “Attackers could potentially download your photos and or post them online, send messages on your behalf, demand ransom and even take over your friends’ accounts,” but thankfully WhatsApp has immediately fixed the problem.

That’s what WhatsApp stated about the problem, which was discovered in the end-to-end encryption of the app: “When Check Point reported the issue, we addressed it within a day and released an update of WhatsApp for web.” In order to be sure that their WhatsApp accounts are safe, the company suggestion to users is to restart their browsers, and to make sure to use an updated version of the app.

WhatsApp for Android: the latest Beta version reintroduces the old Status feature

WA for Android Old StatusAfter just a few weeks from the introduction of the major update that completely changed the WhatsApp Status feature, here we are, with a new Beta version (now we are at version 2.17.95) of the service that brings back the old text-based status message. But why?

It seems that the new Snapchat-like Status that allows WhatsApp users to share photos and images with other contacts has not been completely appreciated by WhatsApp users, on the contrary, the feature has met a lot of criticism. So WhatsApp, that is always trying to meet its users demands, with this latest 2.17.95 Beta version for Android devices, has just brought back its old version of the Status feature.

This latest update doesn’t replace the newly added Status tab, which is still there. Now you simply have both of them, and you are free to use the one that you enjoy more. Where can you find the ‘new-old Status feature’? You can find it under your profile settings, exactly like before, in the About and phone number section.

From here you will be able to see also the statuses of other users. Just like before, the options you have are ‘Available’, ‘Busy’, ‘At school’, ‘At the movies’, etc. Obviously, it does not disappear in 24 hours.

As we said, the feature is still available as a Beta, but it should arrive as a stable version soon. But if you don’t want to wait and prefer to install it immediately on your Android device you can download it from some safe sites such as APK Mirror.

Or, if you are a Beta Tester, you can download it straight from the Google Play Store. If you are not yet a Beta Tester, you can easily join the program from here.  From this page you just have to click on the ‘Become a beta tester’ button. Joining the program will allow you to download the new WhatsApp beta in a few minutes and enjoy it before it is released as a stable version.
