WhatsApp for Android: a new update is available for download

WA For AndroidWho doesn’t know what is WhatsApp? With over 1.2 billion monthly active users this popular Facebook-owned instant messaging app is now one of  the most popular app all over the world, and its popularity keeps growing.

This multi-platform messaging app allows us to exchange text messages and phone calls for free, not to mention the ability to share videos and pictures. Users can install WhatsApp on almost every smartphone, since the app support Android, Windows and iOS platforms. The competition with other similar messaging app (such as Telegram) is very tough, so developers keep working very hard to further improve the performance of our beloved app.

And today we are going to talk about a new update available for Android devices. The new 2.12.227 Beta update has been released and, as usual, comes with bug fixes and performance improvements. Unfortunately this latest update doesn’t add new features, but you might want to install it on your Android device. It is not difficult, but obviously, being a beta, in order to install this latest 2.17.227 version on your device you need to be a Beta Tester.

If you have not yet joined the program you can do it simply opening the Google Play Store Web Page and tap on the “BECOME A TESTER” button. Once you have joined the program you just have to open the Google Play Store App and search for WhatsApp 2.17.227 Beta version. When you have found it you can tap on the “INSTALL” button. That’s it, as simple as that.

Lastly, a brief reminder for those of you who use WhatsApp with BlackBerry OS, BlackBerry 10, Nokia S40, and Nokia S60 platforms. Remember that from the 30th of June WhatsApp will stop supporting these platforms. When WhatsApp announced this decision last year, gave this explanation: “These platforms don’t offer the kind of capabilities we need to expand our app’s features in the future. If you use one of these affected mobile devices, we recommend upgrading to a newer OS version, or to a newer Android running OS 2.3.3+, iPhone running iOS 7+, or Windows Phone 8+ so that you can continue using WhatsApp.”

WhatsApp for iOS: the new 2.17.30 version adds a new album feature and much more

WA for iOS album featureWhatsApp developers are really working harder than ever to keep our favourite instant messaging app always on the top. During the last few months the app has undergone through several changes and we have seen the addition of several new features and improvements, and the best is yet to come.

Today we are going to talk about an interesting feature that has just been added to the iOS version of the app and that has been released with the new 2.17.30 update for iOS devices. We think that iOS users will really enjoy this new option, that will help them to keep their photos better organized.

How does this new album feature work? Let’s say, for example, that you receive multiple photos from the same contact in a row. Well, thanks to this new option they will be grouped together as an album. Isn’t it great? And that’s not all. This latest 2.17.30 update for iOS devices has also added a selection of filters that will allow you to adjust the colour and the tone of your pictures, GIFs and videos, and without even leaving the app.

This new update for the moment offers the choice of five filters: Pop, B&W, Cool, Chrome and Film. All of them can be used simply by swiping up on the photo that you have decided to share with your contacts. Furthermore, you will find a new reply shortcut. To use this new shortcut you just have to swipe right in any message, and you can quickly reply to it. This new features have only been added to the iOS version of the Facebook-owned app, so it seems that for once Android users won’t be the first to use new features.

And, again, that’s not all. According to WABetaInfo, the already popular Recall feature is included in the code of this latest update as well. The problem is that it is currently a hidden feature, so, unfortunately, it is disabled by default and only WhatsApp can enable it. Rumours are that the company intends to launch the Recall option on both iOS and Android at the same time. On the other hand, it could also mean that the developers are just still testing it.

WhatsApp for Android: the latest 2.17.213 Beta update is already available for download

WA For AndroidDear WhatsAppers, here we are, talking again about our favourite instant messaging app. During the last few months the popular Facebook-owned app has been under scrutiny more than ever for several reasons.

For example, some unexplained issues have left many users unable to use WhatsApp in many countries (especially in Europe) a few weeks ago. Or the sharing data plan with Facebook, which is encountering the hostility of many governments and that is costing to both WhatsApp and Facebook a lot of money. But despite these problems, WhatsApp is still the most popular instant messaging app all over the world, with over 1.2 billion monthly active users.

But today we prefer to talk to you about the latest update that WhatsApp developers have just released for Android devices. This new 2.17.213 Beta version of WhatsApp for Android is already available on the Google Play Store, so you can easily download and install it on your Android device.

What changes? To be honest not much, since this new Beta version mainly brings bug fixes and performance improvements. The size of the installation file has been slightly increased and is now 35.05MB. Thanks to the previous version of the app, users can now enjoy the Pin feature, that allows you to pin up to three chats. And this latest 2.17.213 Beta also add minor but precious improvements. We are talking about the ability to look into your photos while you are opening the phone camera.

Well, that said, now let’s see how to install this latest 2.17.213 Beta version of WhatsApp on your Android devices. First of all (obviously) you have to open the browser on your smartphone and go to the Google Play Store. Once you are there, open the Google Play Store App and search for WhatsApp 2.17.213 BETA. Now you can tap “INSTALL” to start the installation process. At this point it is crucial that you use your mobile phone number to get verified and log into your WhatsApp account. That’s it, now you have installed the latest WhatsApp update.

Is it really so bad that teenagers use WhatsApp? A recent study proves the contrary

WA and teenagersAre you one of those parents worried because your children have always their smartphone in the hands, busy chatting with WhatsApp? Well don’t be, since a recent study showed that the popular Facebook-owned instant messaging app not only helps teenagers form closer relationships, but actually allows them to better express themselves.

According to a recent study carried out by Israel’s University of Haifa, class WhatsApp groups really help young people to better express themselves in ways that school doesn’t allow. The study was based on the fact that nowadays young people across the world use WhatsApp (but not only, there are several other successful instant messaging app) as a way of interpersonal communication.

We all know very well that our youths spend many, maybe too many, hours alone in their rooms, especially in the evening and during the night, chatting with their contacts, who could be real or just virtual friends.

And talking about the survey, that’s what Arie Kizel from University of Haifa said to nocamels.com on Sunday: “The discussions on Whatsapp enable the development of a social environment that is warm and human,” adding that  “The group chats are based on trust among the members of the group, and this enhances the possibility to be in contact,“.

The survey monitored two groups of eight teenagers aged 16-17 and two groups of eight youths aged 14-15. The result was that the teenagers felt WhatsApp group as a free space, where there aren’t anymore the hierarchical division created at school.

That’s the description of WhatsApp given by one of the students: “a place where there is respect for language and where all those involved share common terms and signs.” Another student said that “On WhatsApp, I usually feel that I am not being judged, particularly because there isn’t any eye contact or physical contact, only words and signs. So I feel more intimacy and security,”.

The comment of another participant was that “In the WhatsApp group, everyone can talk to everyone else. WhatsApp breaks down the walls we put up between us in class. The WhatsApp group is like a class team-building day,”

WhatsApp latest update could copy a Facebook feature: stickers

StickersLatest rumours report that WhatsApp will soon introduce a popular Facebook Messenger feature: stickers. But, according to WEBetaInfo, unlike Facebook users, it seems that WhatsAppers do not to appreciate this feature, on the contrary, they really dislike it.

But let’s take a step back. First of all, let’s explain what stickers are. Stickers are cartoon drawings, more elaborate and usually larger than emoji. Facebook Messenger introduced stickers in April 2013 and since then has made several changes to them. And now it appears that WhatsApp will introduce this feature as well.

Also Line Messenger, one of the biggest competitor of WhatsApp, uses stickers in order to increase its revenue. You don’t believe it? We give you some numbers: two years ago, for example, Line made $10 million a month just from stickers sales (at the time, the company had 230 million registered users). And Line is in good company, since also Apple introduced paid stickers to its iMessage service last year.

But the rumour is not yet confirmed by WhatsApp, so at the moment we don’t know if the company will follow the same business path adding stickers on its Android and iOS platforms. But one thing we already know: that the reaction of WhatsApp users has been very, very far from positive.

On Twitter you can already find some comments from WhatsApp users. Like this one, for example: “Noooooooo!!!!!! Firstly stories… Now this!!! You guys are ruining WhatsApp,”. Or also “OMG! Those stickers are horrible!“. So, let’s see if WhatsApp will add this new feature anyway, despite the many negative comments coming from its users.

We all know that our beloved Facebook-owned app is currently the most used instant messaging service all over the world, and recent statistics confirm this fact. WhatsApp monthly active users are now 1.2 billion, and they are spending more than 340 million minutes each day making 55 million video calls. That’s an amazing result, if you consider that the video calls feature has only been available for the last six months.

WhatsApp asks its users not to use the new “I love WhatsApp new colors” feature: it is a dangerous scam

WA I love new colors scamOnce again WhatsApp, the Facebook-owned instant messaging app, has been the target of scammers, who try to take advantage from the popularity of the app. During the last few days a new malicious software called “I love WhatsApp new colors” has once again endangered the safety of millions of WhatsApp users.

How does it work? A fake message tells users that they can easily change the look of the app by adding a variety of colours. The message says “I love WhatsApp new colors” adding a link that the user is invited to click on to get the update. At this point the poor WhatsApp user is asked to share the message with up to 12 friends, in order to make this “new feature” work on their app.

And now comes the tricky part, because it is now that the scam really begins. After the users have been verified to start using this new option of the app, they are told that this new feature will only work on a desktop and that, in order to make it work, they have to download and install BlackWhats (an extension available via the Chrome Web Store). Needless to say, this is not a new WhatsApp update, but a well organized attempt to infect at least 12 people at the same time.

WhatsApp is the most popular instant messaging app in the world, and has currently over 1 billion active users all over the world. So it’s easy to imagine how many people could fall for this scam. Obviously WhatsApp urges its users not to forward any message, adding that users have the ability to block malicious messages from their contacts. WhatsApp, on its official FAQ page, gives also some useful suggestions to its users. That’s what the app recommends:

Unwanted messages from unauthorized third parties come in many forms, such as spam, hoax and phishing messages. All these types of messages are broadly defined as unsolicited messages from unauthorized third parties that try to deceive you and prompt you to act in a certain way.  You may be the target of a deceptive scheme if any of the following describes a message you receive, via WhatsApp or email:

  • The sender claims to be affiliated with WhatsApp.
  • The message content includes instructions to forward the message.
  • The message claims you can avoid punishment, like account suspension, if you forward the message.
  • The message content includes a reward or gift from WhatsApp or another person.

What to do if I receive these messages? We always advise you to block the sender, disregard the message and delete it. To learn more about blocking, read this FAQ article. To avoid exposing your contacts to potential harm, please never forward these messages to them.”

In the meantime Google has already removed the BlackWhat extension from the official Chrome Store, and this is good news, because it means that the scam cannot work anymore. So, always keep in mind that WhatsApp releases new features only via software updates, and you will be notified through the Google Play Store when a new version of the app is available for download.

WhatsApp for Windows Phone: the new Beta version 2.17.162 adds a new feature

WP Pin Chat featureDespite a few unexpected difficulties experienced recently (see the outages occurred in several countries during the last month), WhatsApp developers keep rolling out updated versions of our favourite instant messaging app, always offering new features and improved performances.

So today we are going to talk about the latest beta version of WhatsApp available for Windows Phone and Windows 10 Mobile which has been recently released. This latest update is number 2.17.162, and adds two new features.

The first one is already public, and allows Widows Phone users to pin a conversation to their list of conversations. This new “Pin Chats” feature is enabled by default and is finally available for Windows Phone and Windows 10 Mobile users. While we are very glad about this new option, unfortunately the second one is still hidden. What is it about?

It is the new location sharing feature, which we have already seen in Facebook Messenger. The new location sharing feature allows users to share their current location for a specific period, for example an hour. Developers are still testing this new live location feature, so we are not yet able to tell you when you are allowed to use it. Furthermore, Windows Phone users are still waiting to be able to use the Revoke/Recall message feature which, as far as we know, is still being tested by WhatsApp developers.

You can download this latest update of the Facebook-owned instant messaging app straight from the Windows Store, clicking on this link.
