It is official: WhatsApp has just launched native desktop apps for Windows and Mac

native app for windows and macA few days ago on this blog we’ve talked about some rumours (actually they were more than rumours, since leaked screenshots were posted on Twitter by WABetaInfo) that reported the important development of new native desktop apps for both Mac and Windows. Well, today we are finally able to confirm the news, and it has been WhatsApp itself who officially announced the introduction of these completely new apps through a post on its blog.

That’s what the post says, explaining to WhatsApp users how and why they should use these new apps: “Today we’re introducing a desktop app so you have a new way to stay in touch anytime and anywhere – whether on your phone or computer at home or work. Like WhatsApp Web, our desktop app is simply an extension of your phone: the app mirrors conversations and messages from your mobile device. The new desktop app is available for Windows 8+ and Mac OS 10.9+ and is synced with WhatsApp on your mobile device. Because the app runs natively on your desktop, you’ll have support for native desktop notifications, better keyboard shortcuts, and more. To download the app, visit https://www.whatsapp.com/download from your desktop browser. Then, open the app and scan the QR code using the WhatsApp app on your phone (look for WhatsApp Web menu under Settings). Just like WhatsApp Web, the new desktop app lets you message with friends and family while your phone stays in your pocket.”

Even if you still need to scan a QR Code using the WhatsApp mobile app, as you usually did in order to use WhatsApp Web, it really seems that this new app it’s much easier and faster to install. This new tool, already available on Facebook Messenger, will further help WhatsApp to maintain its leading role in the instant messaging world, that’s for sure. And probably in a few months the current 1 billion monthly active users will be much more.

Quick Reply, Multiple Contacts and other Great WhatsApp Beta Features

The latest WhatsApp beta version contained a lot of features that users have been requesting for quite a while. Some of the goodies packed into it include; quick reply from notification, multiple contacts and solid wallpaper colors.

The 2.12.260 version was released to beta-testers via Google Play in late March. Press reports indicate that a number of shortcomings with the older version, that users found most annoying have been fixed. There is no indication if any of these features will ever be made available to iPhone users.

Please note that the features in the beta-test version might never reach the general public. A beta test is a trial run designed to determine if a feature will actually work. Therefore, there’s no guarantee that anything mentioned here will ever be made available to average users.

Here are a few features that people who have seen and used the beta test version found most impressive they include:

Quick Reply from Notification

One of the biggest complaints that some WhatsApp users have been making for years: is that it is impossible to reply to a message without opening the app. It looks like that defect has finally been remedied in 2.12.560.

Beta testers report that there is now a reply button on their phones that automatically opens WhatsApp when you touch it. This lets you reply to a WhatsApp message at the touch of a button.

The button opens up a window containing the message and provides two options to answer. They include a text box and a voice message option. You also get the option to view the message in the full WhatsApp Window before replying to it. Users will also get an opportunity to quickly close the message if they do not want to reply.

Unfortunately, this feature appears to only be available for Android Users. Although it appears to have no relation to Android N’s built in Quick reply feature. That means it could be designed to work with a variety of operating systems.

Multiple Selection for Group Chat

It is now easier than ever to chat with individual group members or part of a group. Instead of a large overlay showing the group, you will see a list of members. If you tap one of their profiles you will get the options to: Archive, Delete, Mute, Unmute, Add a Chat Shortcut, View Contact, Mark as Read and Mark as Unread.

This will make it easier to weed out members you do not want from your group. It will also be easier to add a group member to your regular contacts. Such a feature is sure to come in handy now that you can have up to 236 members in a WhatsApp group chat.

whatsapp-multiple-select

It also means that you can treat group chat conversations more like regular chats. Best of all multiple selection also works in your regular contact list, which makes it easier than ever to edit your contacts.

That way you will be able to make sales and business contacts from WhatsApp chats, and to make friends with chat contacts that share your interests. Therefore it will be easier than ever to create a community of persons that share an interest on WhatsApp.

New Wallpaper Selector

It sounds as if WhatsApp’s engineers have been listening to all the people who thought the Wallpaper was ugly and outdated. They have added a new Wallpaper Selector which provides brighter solid colors and better looking icons.

There’s now a gallery with a wide selection of Wallpaper. You also get the option to offer a solid color and to search WhatsApp’s Wallpaper Library. For those that do not want to be bothered you can even choose no Wallpaper. These options are available in both documents and chat.

The idea is to improve the messaging experience, which some users found boring. It also looks as if WhatsApp is finally trying to adopt industry standards for some of its basic features.

WhatsApp is now a Cutting Edge Communication Solution

These new features clearly demonstrate that WhatsApp is now a cutting edge solution. The features combined with the recent decision to implement end-to-end encryption and Mark Zuckerberg’s commitment to make the messenger more business friendly indicate that WhatsApp is evolving from an SMS into a full communications ecosystem.

Therefore WhatsApp could soon be in a position to offer instantaneous communication to one billion people around the world. More importantly these people will soon be able to send a wide variety of data including chats, documents, videos, photographs and audio at the touch of a button.

This means that those who are serious about business and marketing communication need to get on WhatsApp now. Learning about its’ new features can put you in a position to successfully utilize them for business or marketing.

WhatsApp Beta Testing: a Tremendous Business Opportunity

These features put the spotlight on a tremendous business opportunity that many entrepreneurs are unaware of. WhatsApp now has an official beta test program for Android users that gives participants a sneak peek at potential features.

Best of all, this program is very easy to participate in if you are an Android user. All you have to do is go to WhatsApp’s official beta testing program page on Google Play. If you have WhatsApp on your device; and you sign up for the program, you’ll get an update with the beta test version downloaded for free. Please note that you will have to have the latest version of WhatsApp installed to take advantage of this opportunity.

The beta testing is a potentially profitable opportunity, because it will give savvy entrepreneurs a chance to see and identify new features that they could use in their businesses. Those people will be able to familiarize themselves with the latest WhatsApp features before everybody else.

Since Zuckerberg has promised to add more business capabilities to WhatsApp, some very useful tools could soon be added. Beta Testers will get a chance to see and use those tools before everybody else.

Even if you are not in business, you might benefit from beta testing because you’ll get to see all the exciting new WhatsApp features before everybody else. That way you’ll be able to impress friends and family with your messaging skills and knowledge.

It’s still easy for hackers to attack WhatsApp and Telegram (in spite of end-to-end encryption)

hackersDuring the last few months we’ve witnessed a huge debate generated by the decision of WhatsApp owners to introduce end-to-end encryption to further secure its users safety and privacy. And while users all over the world seem to appreciate this service, some governments (first of all USA government) don’t think that the instant messaging app should push security this far. But this problem doesn’t seem to exist anymore, since another flaw in the security system has arisen.

In fact a new research has demonstrated that hackers can easily breach the security system of WhatsApp and Telegram and even impersonate their targets. The main flaw is the Signaling System n. 7 (or SS7). What is SS7? It is an international telecommunications protocol standard developed in 1975 that allows different mobile operators to exchange information over a signalling network. Well, now Positive Technologies reports that SS7 is vulnerable and hackers with even basic skills could perform dangerous attacks, leading to data leaks, financial loss or disruption of services.

And apps like WhatsApp, Telegram, Facebook and Viber use an authentication system that is routed through SS7 signalling, that’s why hackers could be able to steal users’ identity and impersonate them (virtually). Positive Technologies explains that for their experiment it was used just a simple Linux-based computer and a SDK. This shows that potential hackers don’t even need sophisticated tools. According to Positive Technologies, the main problem is that the SS7 signalling technology, since 1975, has never been really updated.

But this problem is not new to security experts, who, in 2014 during the 31st Chaos Communication Congress held in Germany, gave a warning about its lack of security measures. And that’s what Alex Mathews, technical manager EMEA of Positive Technologies, affirms concluding the last report of Positive Technologies: “Service providers such as WhatsApp need to consider introducing additional mechanisms to verify the identity of users to stay secure“.

Whatsapp for Nokia 8250

The Nokia 8250 is an old feature phone that was produced at one time by Nokia. It employed GSM-type network towers, was released in 2000, and served as a great standard feature phone. It weighed 81 grams and was 19 millimeters thick, and it had a talk and text life of 2.5 hours, as well as a potential standby time of up to 150 hours.
Nokia 8250
The Nokia 8250 has long since been discontinued by Nokia, and it can only be purchased on a secondary market like eBay. Furthermore, most networks will no longer support this phone unless if it was grandfathered in by a user previously.

Can the Nokia 8250 Run Whatsapp?

Unfortunately, the Nokia 8250 is not capable of running the Whatsapp application. Doing so requires that a user possess a phone that has a recent version of Android OS or iOS, which is the standard operating system for apple devices. Since the Nokia 8250 is only a feature phone–not a smartphone–it doesn’t have any sort of “smart OS” running on it. As a result, it doesn’t have access to the app stores that smart phones provide.

What Do I Need to Run Whatsapp?

If you still want to run the Whatsapp smartphone application, you will need to obtain a smartphone that is capable of running a recent version of Android OS, iOS, Blackberry OS, or Windows OS. Thankfully, you can now find many of these smartphones on sale for as little as $50 or less, and you can buy them from a number of different wireless providers, as well as from retail stores like WalMart.

Once you have obtained a relatively new smartphone, you will need to go to that phone’s app store to download the app. On every smartphone you could buy, the app store for that particular operating system is usually shown to you on your “home page”, which is the first screen you will see when you power up the phone.

If it isn’t there, you will need to look in your applications list to find the app store. Once there, use the search feature to search for “Whatsapp”, and you will be able to download the app from the app store. Once it is finished downloading and installing, Voila! You may now use the Whatsapp application to send free SMS.

If you would like more to learn more about the Nokia 8250, you may do so at GSM Arena, which is a website dedicated to researching and reviewing GSM-based phones.
