WhatsApp for iOS: latest 2.16.7.1 Beta version finally gets GIF support

GIF iOSToday we have really great news for those of you who use WhatsApp with  iOS. The new 2.16.7.1 Beta release in fact not only comes with several bug fixes and performance improvements, but, finally, adds support for autoplaying GIF images. The news of this latest major change was given by @WABetaInfo, a Twitter account which tracks beta releases of the app.

Unfortunately for the moment we are not yet able to tell you when GIF image support will be available as a stable version and, most importantly, when this latest feature will be available on Android devices as well. But we do know that GIF support was very much awaited by WhatsApp users. And probably it’s not a coincidence that this latest feature has been added soon after that Viber, one of the biggest rivals of WhatsApp, added GIF image support to its platform.

And that’s not all dear WhatsAppers. This latest 2.16.7.1 Beta version of WhatsApp for iOS brings also other changes to the app. Thanks to this latest update, now WhatsApp users will be able to save the gif image to their camera roll (including the option to save it as a simple image), or to reply directly to gif image messages. Furthermore, Beta 2.16.7.1 brings also encryption support for gif sharing and support for 3D Touch actions on gif images (Peek and Pop).

It is a fact that users of instant messaging services are always looking for new ways to communicate their moods and feelings, and sending GIFs seems to be perfect for this purpose. For this reason Facebook itself added the feature on its Messenger app, followed by Twitter. In February, Twitter revealed that last year users of Twitter shared over 100 million GIFsexpressing everything from their mood, to an amazing dunk, to their favorite dance move from a music video“.

Great New WhatsApp Features

Yet news articles make it clear that the encryption is only the tip of the iceberg. There are lots of other goodies for users who download and install beta. Some of the most exciting new features include:

An Improved Camera Interface

The biggest and perhaps most exciting news about the WhatsApp 2.16.2 Beta Update for Android is a greatly improved camera interface . News reports indicate that WhatsApp’s engineers have completely updated the camera interface.

This corrects a major complaint that some users have had, namely that the camera interface has not been upgraded in a long, long time. Here are some of the new features you’ll find in the camera:

  • The annoying box that appeared at the top of the screen while shooting is gone. Instead there is a small tip on how to shoot a video when you start the process.

  • There are new icons for the camera and the flash.
  • That ugly and annoying blue-colored shutter has been replaced with a white color button.
  • All you need to do to shoot a video is to touch the white shutter button which will turn red when recording starts.
  • To stop shooting a video all you will need to do is take your finger off the button.
  • There is now one button for sending images and videos in the regular chat window. The big circular send and cancel buttons are now history.
  • To cancel video or image sending all you will have to do is to tap the button at the top left hand corner of the screen.
  • The caption box is now at the bottom which gives you a better view of the image.

Unfortunately, some of the better features on WhatsApp for iPhone such as cloud-storage integration are not yet available for Android, although they should appear in future beta testing versions.

One feature that is available right now is improved group sharing. It is now possible to share videos and photos with up to 256 in a group. This means you can send out videos or photos to all of your friends, family or coworkers.

The advent of end-to-end encryption also means that your photographs and videos are going to be far more secure on WhatsApp than ever before. That means you will be able to use WhatsApp as a sort of SMS photo album or video storage solution in the future.

How to avoid WhatsApp scam

whatsapp scamIt seems that recently WhatsApp users have been affected by scams more than usual. Many users are in fact reporting that they are receiving a message that invite them to switch to WhatsApp Gold (the famous premium version of the instant messaging app). This version of WhatsApp was so far available only to celebrities, but the spammer has contacted WhatsApp users encouraging them to change version of the app, and promising that using WhatsApp Gold would allow them to make video calls, delete messages after they’ve sent them and send 100 pictures at once.

And that’s just the last one of several other malicious softwares circulating on the web. For the moment it is unknown how many users were affected by the scam, and it’s not even sure if it’s real. The Telegraph did a test and was not able to find WhatsApp Gold in the Android or iOS app stores, and discovered also that the website address in the message reports a 404 error page. In the meantime, another scam is still affecting users. We are talking about WhatsApp Plus. This scam attracts users claiming that it will allow to send pictures, videos and music files of an unlimited size. But obviously WhatsApp Plus has nothing to do with WhatsApp, and users who have already downloaded this fake app will have another unpleasant surprise.

That’s what the company said: “WhatsApp Plus is an application that was not developed by WhatsApp, nor is it authorised by WhatsApp. WhatsApp Plus contains source code which WhatsApp cannot guarantee as safe and that your private information is potentially being passed to 3rd parties without your knowledge or authorisation.”  As a result, the Facebook-owned service has decided to block users who have downloaded WhatsApp Plus. What if you are one of them? To be able to use again WhatsApp you have to delete the fake app, and then, after 24 hours, WhatsApp will enable you again to use the official app.

To avoid these kind of problems there are some tips that you can follow. The main suggestion comes from WhatsApp itself. In fact the instant messaging service has alerted its users that WhatsApp will never send a message asking users to upgrade their device or to download another app. Suspicious messages are also those in which the sender says to be associated with WhatsApp, or when somebody offers you a reward, or when you are asked to forward the message.

WhatsApp clearly recommends users to report these kind of messages to the company and to “block the sender, disregard the message and delete it“. So be careful and always think twice before opening messages or before downloading third party apps.

This popular app keeps growing, and its active users around the world are now one billion. And the developers of WhatsApp are well aware that to win the competition they must offer the best possible service.

As a result, they constantly improve our favourite app, often adding new useful features. We can’t deny that WhatsApp has rapidly changed our lives and the way we communicate in a way we couldn’t even imagine just a few years ago. WhatsApp for desktop: have you already tried Whatsie?

whatsieA few weeks ago WhatsApp users were certainly very pleased to discover that a new native desktop client  of their favourite instant messaging app had just been released. What more can you do now? Thanks to this new desktop client, WhatsApp users who spend most of their day on their laptops or computer are now allowed to stay in touch with their family and friends, without using mobile phones.

Furthermore, unlike Whatsapp Web, you can use it even when the browser doesn’t work. But despite the great usefulness of WhatsApp for desktop, it seems that many people have not appreciated its aesthetics, especially compared to that of WhatsApp for Windows Phone. That’s why the same people who developed Facebook Messenger for desktop decided to create Whatsie. What is Whatsie?

This third-party app is not so different from WhatsApp’s desktop client, since it just customizes WhatsApp Web. The main difference, as we mentioned above, is that Whatsie can be used without the support of a browser such as Chrome, Firefox or Edge. At this point you might think that Whatsie works like Whatswrapp, the app that you can find in the Windows Store, but they are not exactly the same.

What can you do with Whatsie? First of all, you have the choice of 7 themes, and you can change them whenever you prefer. Then, of course, the app offers toast notifications and it can be placed on top of the Windows 10 notification bar. Furthermore, another option allows you to launch Whatsie on Startup.

Whatsie runs on Mac and Linux computers, and works also with OS X. Whatsie is even compatible with Debian, Ubuntu, Fedora CentOS and Red Hat. So, do you like Whatsie and wonder how to install it on your computer? You won’t find the app on the Windows Store app. To download it you need to go to the developers website.
