WhatsApp for Windows Phone: the Video Calling feature has finally been activated

WA Windows Phone video callingWhatsApp developers have just released a new update of our favourite instant messaging app. This is both good news and bad news because we are talking about the introduction of the feature we were all waiting for: the Video Calling option. Good news because WhatsAppers will finally be able to make video calls, bad news because only users with Windows Phone devices will be able to use this much awaited feature.

If you think about it, that’s quite odd because it is usually the Android platform to receive major updates first, since its users are the majority. Actually the Video Calling feature was added in a previous APK of WhatsApp for Android, but it didn’t work as expected. But we think (and hope) that this is a sign that this amazing option will soon be added on all the other platforms supporting WhatsApp.

That said, let’s see how you can use WhatsApp to make video calls with your Windows Phone device. First thing to know is that this new feature comes with the latest 2.16.260 beta version of WhatsApp for Windows Phone devices. Good news is that you don’t have to do anything tricky: the feature will be enabled by default. It means that users will be able to use it as soon as they update their smartphone with this latest 2.16.260 beta of WhatsApp. Now let’s see how you can use this new feature.

When you click on the call button, along with the Voice Call option you will see also the Video Call option, from the same menu. Another way to use this new option is from the contact details: when you click and expand a contact to have more details, an option to make a video call will show up. It appears that this new feature works as the voice calling option.

It means that you will have your call history, and that if you miss a call, you will be notified in the same way as with the voice call. Furthermore, users will be able to mute the audio and to swap between the front and rear cameras during their video calls.

The first website to report the news was OneWindows.es, a Spanish site, but obviously now many other websites are talking about this latest fantastic update of WhatsApp.

WhatsApp for Windows Phone: further improvements with the latest version 2.16.256

WA for Windows Phone 2 16 256The developers of WhatsApp have released a new update for Windows Phone and Windows 10 Mobile. This latest version, number 2.16.256, doesn’t bring major changes to the app, nonetheless there are some new features along with the usual bug fixes and performance improvements. The changelog has not been provided, so we are not able to see if there are going to be many new features, but one change is already available. We are talking about the Camera Button which is now available on the Chat Page. You can download this latest version of WhatsApp for Windows Phone straight from the Microsoft Store using this link.

As we said, this latest update doesn’t bring major changes, but it comes just after a few days from the release of the last one, which added some important features such as:

  • GIF Support (and the ability to send videos as GIFS);
  • OneDrive BackUp (you can find it going to Settings–>Chats & Calls–>Backup–>OneDrive settings);
  • Ability to forward messages and images to multiple contacts or groups;
  • Ability to share images from gallery with multiple contacts or groups.

By now, everybody knows that WhatsApp is one of the most successful instant messaging app in the world, with over one billion active users. This Facebook-owned service is now used everywhere in the world to keep in touch with friends, family and colleagues for free and, most important, it’s become a powerful way to share and spread news all over the world.

That’s why some goverments try to limit or even prevent its use. And what happened last Sunday during the election day in Montenegro showed once again the importance reached by the app. During the country’s parliamentary election, WhatsApp and Viber were blocked for several hours because, according to the authorities, “unlawful marketing” was being spread through the networks. It was the regulatory Agency for Electronic Communications and Postal Services itself to order telecom operators to ban the use of these two popular instant messaging apps.

Obviously this decision has created negative critics and reactions all over Europe. Telenor, a Montenegrin local operator, tried to explain the blocking order through some tweets, saying that “The Agency for Electronic Communications and Postal Services ordered all telecommunication operators to turn off the option to use the applications Viber, WhatsApp and the like, which were used today for unwanted communication with the users. The possibility for use of these services will be turned off until the Agency determines an end of the ban with a special notice.”

WhatsApp for Android: new features are available with the latest 2.16.306 version

WA for Android 14 october 2016The developers of WhatsApp have released another update of the app dedicated to Android users. As you certainly know, it is possible to install this Facebook-owned multi-platform instant messaging app on iOS, Android, and Windows devices. But, since Android users are the majority, this platform receives updates more often.

So today we are going to talk about this latest 2.16.306 version of WhatsApp for Android devices. Let’s see immediately what changes according to the changelog:

  • Now you can draw or add text and emojis to photos and videos you capture within WhatsApp. You can also pick a brush size or font style by dragging left on the color selector.
  • In groups, you can now mention specific people by typing the @ symbol.
  • Group admins can now invite people to join a group by sharing a link. From group info, just tap Add participants > Invite to group via link.
  • New emoji. And sending a single emoji will now appear larger in chats.

The APK file of this latest update of WhatsApp for Android weighs around 26MB and can be downloaded on all devices running at least Android 2.3.4 OS. You can already download this latest version of WhatsApp straight from the Google Play Store, or, if you prefer to download it manually, you can install the APK file for free thanks to some safe
sources such as APKPolice.com.

Some of these new features were added with previous Beta, but it seems that not all of them have been entirely appreciated. It seems in fact that users are not happy with the new format of the emojis, that now appear bigger and more expressive. This recent update, which is now available for both Android and iOS platforms, has received many negative comments by users (just to give you an example, someone said that “The new emoji style on Whatsapp is hideous“). And you? Do you like these new emojis?

WhatsApp and Facebook: Germany puts a stop to data sharing

data sharing facebook and whatsappMore problems for Facebook and WhatsApp following their Data Sharing Project. It appears that in Europe this decision is raising great concerns and therefore the two services may be banned from sharing their data. Germany has been the first country to take this decision and seems that the UK will follow the same path soon.

Last week the Germany’s Data Protection Commissioner already told Facebook that it must stop collecting information on its users through WhatsApp. In addition, the Commissioner also ordered Facebook to delete any data it has already received. But why? The commissioner claimed that Facebook has not kept its promise made on 2014 to keep the data of the two services separate.

According to the commissioner, Facebook should have asked the permission to WhatsApp users to collect their data, but it did not happen. And a very similar situation may occur in the UK, where WhatsApp and Facebook have never been too loved by the authority. The UK’s national data protection whatchdog, the ICO, is considering to take actions against the two messaging services. The ICO (Information Commissioner’s Office) is the office responsible in the UK for data protection and is an independent body that usually acts in an advisory role, even if it actually has the authority to fine corporations who violate current regulations on data protection.

During an in interview on Radio 4, information commissioner Elizabeth Denham stated that “an investigation into the data-sharing” has already been launched. Denham also added: “My intervention is an advocacy intervention on behalf of all of the WhatsApp users in the UK — and boy have we heard from them! They are quite concerned. There’s a lot of anger out there. And again it goes back to promises, commitment, fairness and transparency. We have launched an investigation into the data-sharing, remembering that in 2014 when Facebook bought WhatsApp there was a commitment made that between the two companies they would not share information.” During the program, Denham also claimed that “It’s an active and important investigation, I know the public wants to hear from us as to what we’re doing — and you will hear from us very shortly.”

WhatsApp for Android: the latest update adds Public Group Chat Links

wa per android invite linksAnother interesting update of WhatsApp is available for Android Beta Testers. This latest upgrade, number 2.16.281, along with the usual bug fixes and performance improvements, adds a new feature that enables group admins to invite people to their group thanks to a new “invite to group via link” option that appears at the top of the contacts list. How does this new option work?

By tapping the new ‘Invite to group via link’ button, a unique link to the chat that can be shared with other contacts is generated. In addition, this special link can also be revoked. And users know that this option can come in handy if you want to stop people from joining the group. But this latest 2.16.281 Beta version of WhatsApp for Android brings another new feature. It is a new quick forward button for media, that enables WhatsApp users to easily share media to other conversations.

This new icon (which has the shape of a curved arrow) appears next to links, pictures, videos, GIFs and other media, and allows Android users to forward them to another chat. How can you install this latest 2.16.281 Beta version of WhatsApp on your Android device? As usual, it is very simple. If you are a Beta Tester you simply have to grab your smartphone, open the Google Play Store, swipe in the display from the left side and then select ‘My Apps’. At this point just click on WhatsApp and then click on the ‘Update’ button.

If you live in Germany, today we have other news concerning WhatsApp, specifically about the controversial decision to share users’ data with Facebook. Recent news report that the Germany’s data protection commissioner has informed Facebook that it must stop collecting information on its users through WhatsApp. In addition, Facebook was also told to delete any data it has already received. What are the reasons behind this decision? The commissioner claimed that Facebook has not kept its promise made on 2014 to keep the data of the two services separate. According to the commissioner, Facebook should have asked the permission to WhatsApp users to collect their data, but it did not happen.
